I posted a little while back that the Rangers are not impressing us because they are not over-achieving. At this point, I am wrong. They are now under-achieving.
This team stinks, as of late. Can't blame it on Jon Daniels or anyone in the front office. Can only blame Wash some. He has finally pulled some strings and messed with the batting order, with great results following. Perhaps he could have done some other things along the way.
But the blame falls all at the players' feet, particularly the lack of offensive production. Proven veterans making tons of money simply aren't producing. Until they do, we can expect more of the same . . . and a slip out of first place soon to follow.
I'll talk Rangers here, because I think most of my family has blocked me on Facebook due to previous excessive Rangers talk.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Rangers do stink (to an extent - I still love them though). In your previous post about them, I believed they aren't impressing us because I just want them to be sent straight to the World Series and play for the title again. Yes, I know that isn't how baseball works. They've got to play to get to the World Series. After watching the Rangers get there two seasons ago and again to fall painfully short last season has made sitting through this season an absolute grind. I call this a "video game" mentality.
Onto your current post. I think some of the fault lays on Jon Daniels. Yes, he was able to get Dempster, but would you rather have Dempster starting tonight or Greinke? The Rangers have a great farm system and as far as I've read, the Brewers weren't even asking for either one of our two best prospects, Profar or Olt. Heck, the Rangers may have been able to get both pitchers.
The Angels have shown they're willing to basically sacrifice their farm system to 1-up the Rangers and win the World Series. I don't think the Rangers would have suffered much if they gave up prospects to strengthen the pitching staff. How much would you be willing to give up to strengthen your chances to win the World Series?
With their moves and the emergence of the "modern day Mickey Mantle" on their team, I think the Angels are the true favorites to win it all and it has shown it in the series this week. The Rangers may be lucky to win a wild card spot and I hope they prove me wrong.
Yi-Fu: I completely understand the video game mentality of this year. I'm right there with you.
ReplyDeleteYou're right-the Angels have emerged as the favorites. The past couple of games, anyway, they almost look like the '27 Yankees. Not really, but man do they look strong.
It's definitely been interesting this yr, as far as the moves we have made and the moves we haven't. My hope going into this yr is that we have a great year but don't lose sight the incredible future potential we have with the outstanding farm system. I hadn't heard Brewers didn't want Olt OR Profar. That definitely puts things in a new light.
Well, upon more reading, the Brewers wanted one of the three: Olt, Profar, or M. Perez. I understand its a 1/2 season rental, but man, its for a really good pitcher. They could've offered the least of the 3, Perez (and an extra player or two), and probably still be okay.
